In what’s becoming a recurring theme in these past weeks, the Colorado Avalanche announced today that they’ve made yet another trade, their third in two weeks and second in just two days.

They acquired defenseman Ryan O’Byrne from Montreal in exchange for prospect Michael Bournival on November 11th and yesterday they exchanged D-men with the Boston Bruins, Matt Hunwick coming to the Avs and prospect Colby Cohen headed to Beantown (or more likely, the Providence Bruins of the AHL). Today, they traded away a player that was actually playing with the big club, sending Scott Hannan to Washington in exchange for forward Tomas Fleischmann.

Washington was looking for a sturdy, stay-at-home defenseman that could log some big minutes (something they obviously needed during their last two trips to the Stanley Cup Playoffs), and while we can speculate about the rumors that mused the Capitals were working out a similar deal with the Los Angeles Kings, the end result remains the same: Scott Hannan now plays for the Washington Capitals. They got “their guy.”

In Fleischmann, the Avs receive a highly skilled forward who, for the last couple of years, has kind of been hidden in the shadow of Alex Ovechkin, Niklas Backstrom and Alexander Semin, thus relegated to less minutes which colloquial logic translates to less points.
One would think that if Fleischmann, who is still only 26 years old, were to play with a high caliber center at all times like Paul Stastny or Matt Duchene, he could blossom into a 30-35 a year goal scorer.

While we wish Scott Hannan the best following his somewhat surprising departure from the Mile High City, the offensive attack of this team just keeps getting scarier.

With Chris Stewart, Peter Mueller and T.J. Galiardi all missing time with injuries (broken hand, concussion and a broken wrist, respectively), Avalanche general manager Greg Sherman probably couldn’t have picked a better time to swing this kind of deal.
In theory, Fleischmann will join the Avs and pick up some of the slack left by the aforementioned injuries, and when the players listed above return to the lineup (fingers crossed), the Avalanche could be a real headache for teams trying to shut them down.

The Avalanche host the Atlanta Thrashers tonight. The puck drops at 8:00 PM (Mountain Standard Time) and while I’ve confirmed that new acquisition Matt Hunwick will be in the lineup (possibly for a rematch with Evander Kane? Just kidding. Kind of.), it remains unclear if the Avs most recent acquisition, Tomas Fleischmann will arrive in Denver in time to attend.
If he can’t, and I personally wouldn’t bet on it (in my experience watching hockey, players tend to need a day to get ‘the essentials’ together, fly out to whatever city they’re headed to and a few other factors that could prevent them from getting into the lineup), I’d expect tough guy David Koci to make his season debut (he’s missed all of the Avs games due to a broken jaw and most recently, being a healthy scratch).

The Colorado Avalanche have announced that they've completed a trade with the Boston Bruins.

Matt Hunwick will be moving to Colorado while Avs prospect Colby Cohen will likely be headed to Providence to meet up with the AHL Bruins.

I'd have more on this, but it's been a very long day and while I'd like to share my thoughts with my readers about how I don't like this trade for the Avs, I'm just going to go to sleep instead.

However, I do have to say that after seeing Hunwick play in Boston for the last few years, he's a good young player. But I think Cohen will be the better of the two in the long run.

But that's just me.

The Colorado Avalanche announced this morning that they had acquired defenseman Ryan O'Byrne from the Montreal Canadiens in exchange for 18 year old prospect Michael Bournival.

The move comes on the heels of an injury marred first couple of months this season for the Avs, who have lost 4 of their top 6 defenders to injury.

Captain Adam Foote, Kyle Cumiskey and Kyle Quincey are all missing from the lineup due to concussion like symptoms while Ryan Wilson is also missing time because of an apparent leg injury.

This situation leaves 4 rookies picking up a lot of the slack, Jonas Holos, David Liffiton, Kevin Shattenkirk and Colby Cohen. Among them, Holos has the most NHL experience, with 10 games.

O'Byrne will help the Avs blueline, adding size, some grit and 128 games worth of NHL experience to the thin lineup.

The season starts in alittle over 48 hours, the beer is being chilled, the Red Wings 2010-2011 roster is set, and opponents should already be pissing their pants.  So who made the team?

Forwards - Henrik Zetterberg, Pavel Datsyuk, Tomas Holmstrom, Todd Bertuzzi, Valtteri Filppula, Johan Franzen, Dan Cleary, Mike Modano, Jiri Hudler, Darren Helm, Justin Abdelkader, Patrick Eaves, Kris Draper and Drew Miller

Defensemen - Nicklas Lidstrom, Niklas Kronwall, Brian Rafalski, Brad Stuart, Ruslan Salei, Jonathan Ericsson, and Jakub Kindl

Goaltenders - Jimmy Howard, Chris Osgood.

Jesus tapdancing Christ, is that a roster to fear.

As for those notable names missing, Kirk Maltby, who spent 14 years with the organization has cleared waivers and will start the season in Grand Rapids.  Rumor has it, however, that the 37 year old will likely retire and possibly join the Red Wings front office as a scout.  He has until tomorrow to decide.  Derek Meech has also cleared waivers and will be reporting to the Griffins.

Not reporting to Grand Rapids is Mattias Ritola, who has claimed off waivers Tuesday by the Tampa Bay Lightning.  Because of his time in the Red Wings front office, Lightning GM Steve Yzerman knows Ritola well and while he didn't make the Wings squad, Yzerman will make sure he feels at home in Tampa.

Is it October yet? YES!

As we near the beginning of the season, its important to mention one thing - I'm third generation "I don't give a damn" when it comes to preseason hockey.  Sorry, I just don't care.  Other teams are trying to gel and figure out what combinations could propel them to the playoffs and the Wings, on the other hand, are just trying to not hurt themselves and getting their AHL players of NHL experience.  Both are fine but its boring, the scores don't count and its barely on television.

The most relevant thing this time of year is the regular season roster and the line between those that will be playing at the Joe and those that will be playing in Grand Rapids (or simply just not playing) is being drawn.  After suffering a concussion in Saturday's preseason game against Chicago, the Detroit News reporters that enforcer Aaron Downey has been released.  I don't think anyone really expected him to make the team but it is sad to see a career likely end like that.

On to Grand Rapids are forwards Willie Coetzee, Ilari Filppula and Jamie Tardif, defensemen Travis Ehrhardt, Sergei Kolosov, Sebastien Piche and Logan Pyett and goaltender Thomas McCollum.  None of these are surprises, though it would have been awesome to see iFilp play next to his brother in Detroit.

The Wings currently have 40 players on their roster and will need to get to 23 by next week.  Some will be obvious (goalie's MacDonald and Pearce, defenseman Lashoff and Janik, forwards Raedeke, Minard, Owens and Andersson) but the Wings do have some tough choices to make.  Who stays between Eaves, Miller and Ritola?  Who is going to provide a defense with some smart, consistent play on the third line?  And more importantly, who's gonna stay healthy long enough?

Ok, maybe preseason isn't that boring afterall.
