Pro Sports Hockey Colorado Avalanche

In what’s becoming a recurring theme in these past weeks, the Colorado Avalanche announced today that they’ve made yet another trade, their third in two weeks and second in just two days.

They acquired defenseman Ryan O’Byrne from Montreal in exchange for prospect Michael Bournival on November 11th and yesterday they exchanged D-men with the Boston Bruins, Matt Hunwick coming to the Avs and prospect Colby Cohen headed to Beantown (or more likely, the Providence Bruins of the AHL). Today, they traded away a player that was actually playing with the big club, sending Scott Hannan to Washington in exchange for forward Tomas Fleischmann.

Washington was looking for a sturdy, stay-at-home defenseman that could log some big minutes (something they obviously needed during their last two trips to the Stanley Cup Playoffs), and while we can speculate about the rumors that mused the Capitals were working out a similar deal with the Los Angeles Kings, the end result remains the same: Scott Hannan now plays for the Washington Capitals. They got “their guy.”

In Fleischmann, the Avs receive a highly skilled forward who, for the last couple of years, has kind of been hidden in the shadow of Alex Ovechkin, Niklas Backstrom and Alexander Semin, thus relegated to less minutes which colloquial logic translates to less points.
One would think that if Fleischmann, who is still only 26 years old, were to play with a high caliber center at all times like Paul Stastny or Matt Duchene, he could blossom into a 30-35 a year goal scorer.

While we wish Scott Hannan the best following his somewhat surprising departure from the Mile High City, the offensive attack of this team just keeps getting scarier.

With Chris Stewart, Peter Mueller and T.J. Galiardi all missing time with injuries (broken hand, concussion and a broken wrist, respectively), Avalanche general manager Greg Sherman probably couldn’t have picked a better time to swing this kind of deal.
In theory, Fleischmann will join the Avs and pick up some of the slack left by the aforementioned injuries, and when the players listed above return to the lineup (fingers crossed), the Avalanche could be a real headache for teams trying to shut them down.

The Avalanche host the Atlanta Thrashers tonight. The puck drops at 8:00 PM (Mountain Standard Time) and while I’ve confirmed that new acquisition Matt Hunwick will be in the lineup (possibly for a rematch with Evander Kane? Just kidding. Kind of.), it remains unclear if the Avs most recent acquisition, Tomas Fleischmann will arrive in Denver in time to attend.
If he can’t, and I personally wouldn’t bet on it (in my experience watching hockey, players tend to need a day to get ‘the essentials’ together, fly out to whatever city they’re headed to and a few other factors that could prevent them from getting into the lineup), I’d expect tough guy David Koci to make his season debut (he’s missed all of the Avs games due to a broken jaw and most recently, being a healthy scratch).

The Colorado Avalanche have announced that they've completed a trade with the Boston Bruins.

Matt Hunwick will be moving to Colorado while Avs prospect Colby Cohen will likely be headed to Providence to meet up with the AHL Bruins.

I'd have more on this, but it's been a very long day and while I'd like to share my thoughts with my readers about how I don't like this trade for the Avs, I'm just going to go to sleep instead.

However, I do have to say that after seeing Hunwick play in Boston for the last few years, he's a good young player. But I think Cohen will be the better of the two in the long run.

But that's just me.

You can find the official press release at the Avalanche's official website, here.

The Colorado Avalanche announced this morning that they had acquired defenseman Ryan O'Byrne from the Montreal Canadiens in exchange for 18 year old prospect Michael Bournival.

The move comes on the heels of an injury marred first couple of months this season for the Avs, who have lost 4 of their top 6 defenders to injury.

Captain Adam Foote, Kyle Cumiskey and Kyle Quincey are all missing from the lineup due to concussion like symptoms while Ryan Wilson is also missing time because of an apparent leg injury.

This situation leaves 4 rookies picking up a lot of the slack, Jonas Holos, David Liffiton, Kevin Shattenkirk and Colby Cohen. Among them, Holos has the most NHL experience, with 10 games.

O'Byrne will help the Avs blueline, adding size, some grit and 128 games worth of NHL experience to the thin lineup.

Normally, I don't look into rumors too much for my job here at The Sports Radio.  The rumors, whispers and miscellaneous trade / free agent talk I hear from around the league usually gets posted at my personal blog

But seeing as how this particular rumor involves the team I cover for TSP, and it's picked up significant steam in the last couple of days, it's probably time I write about it.

As I wrote about previously, the Colorado Avalanche were dealt a major blow to their forward ranks last week with the injury to Peter Mueller (his second concussion in less than six months).  And while many have speculated that the Avs would simply give a young, up and coming player a chance to prove himself at the NHL level in Mueller's spot, there has been some trade talk picking up about the Avalanche's available options.

The rumor, that's becoming particularly strong, is that the Avs could look to the cash-strapped New Jersey Devils for help.

The Devils sit at about $63 million, roughly $4 million above the 2010-11 NHL salary cap ceiling, and thus have to move between $3-6 million dollars before the season starts (The Devils were also fined against the cap for the whole Ilya Kovalchuk fiasco), and one of the leading candidates for a change of address is Devils captain Jamie Langenbrunner.

Langenbrunner carries a single year left on his contract at about $2.8 million and has a No-Trade Clause he would have to waive for such a trade to take place.

While there is that little hurdle to overcome, you can't help but think that it's a move that would make sense for the Avalanche.

The Avs aren't sure when Peter Mueller will be back, or if he even will be back at all this season, Jamie Langenbrunner brings lots of versatility, lots of leadership and some offensive ability for a relatively affordable price.  Not to mention he played on a line with Avalanche center Paul Stastny during the 2010 Olympics in Vancouver on Team USA.

That said, the Devils have never (and likely never will be -- as long as GM Lou Lamoriello's around) been an easy team to make trades with.
Lou's a very crafty negotiator and if Avalanche GM Greg Sherman does decide to go to the trade route -- and the Avs are in fact looking at acquiring Langenbrunner -- one has to wonder just what Colorado would be willing to give up.
New Jersey's not really in a position to bargain at this point, with their salary cap situation, but you never know what Lamoriello's got up his sleeve.
Would he accept a mid-round draft pick, a prospect?  Is he even interested in trading his captain?

I guess we'll just have to wait and see.

Sources have confirmed that Avalanche forward Peter Mueller, who recently signed a 2-year contract extension with Colorado through the 2011-12 season, is out indefinitely due to another concussion he suffered in Wednesday night's preseason game against the Los Angeles Kings.

It's unclear just where Mueller sustained the injury during the game.  There are no video replays to watch to try and figure it out -- at least not available to the public -- because the Avs' preseason games are rarely televised.

This could be a career threatening injury for Peter Mueller, who saw a resurgence in his play after being acquired by the Avalanche at the March 3rd deadline last season.  Concussions are very tricky, especially for hockey players.
I'm sure many Avalanche fans remember former Av (and current video coach) Adam Deadmarsh who went through similar problems with concussions, and we can only hope that Mueller's condition isn't as severe.
