Pro Sports Hockey Colorado Avalanche Avs training camp update - Day 2

Day 2 had a little more intensity to it than the first day of training camp. In a short camp, players only have so much time to impress the coaching staff / management team and thus, things tend to get pretty intense during the last couple days of camp.

Today was no different.

We'll start with the goalies:

John Grahame looked awful for the Grey Team today. He played all but 6 or 7 minutes in the first scrimmage and let in kind of a weak goal to Ryan O'Reilly. He didn't look comfortable at all. In the second scrimmage he didn't look any better, but he did stop a nice cross-crease opportunity courtesy of Dan Winnik and Wacey Hamilton.

Peter Budaj looked confident still, but didn't play as well today as he did yesterday. He did, however, make what I thought was a very nice save on Chris Stewart during a 2-on-1 in the second scrimmage today.

Trevor Cann looked a lot better today. The only time he really looked like he was having  a hard time was when Matt Duchene beat him with a shot to the right side.

Jason Bacashihua looked shaken today. He made a few nice saves, but let in 3 goals in the first scrimmage.

Craig Anderson had a pretty good day today. Only times he really got beat was by a nice Zach Cohen attempt on a penalty shot in the second scrimmage and a big slapshot by Brandon Yip in the third.

Calvin Pickard looked outstanding to me today. I honestly can't think of a time he let in a soft goal or looked out of position. Looked way better today than he did yesterday.

Brandon Maxwell looked pretty average.

Defense:

Kevin Shattenkirk looked a little bit better today. Tallied an assist on one of Yip's goals.

Colby Cohen looked better today as well. Scored a pretty sweet one-timer in the second scrimmage.

Jonas Holos didn't make much of an impression today. He looked kind of shaken after David Koci straight up flattened him during the second scrimmage.

Kyle Quincey made a really nice hit on Matt Ford during the second scrimmage as well. he played pretty physical today. Got into a scrap with Dan Winnik in the second.

John-Michael Liles made a nice little play against Ryan Wilson and scored a goal in the second scrimmage of the day.

Cameron Gaunce continues to look a little lost to me. He did, however, get into a bit of a scrum with (who I thought was) Justin Mercier near the end of the second. Kid's starting to show his teeth a little.

Kyle Cumiskey's been held out of the first two days of training camp with what I'm told is a minor groin pull.

Kevin Montgomery broke up a 2-on-1 in the first scrimmage.

Forwards:

Cody McLeod stood out physically today. Planted a pretty nice check on Kevin Shattenkirk early on.

Brandon Yip looked fantastic today. Scored 3 goals.

David Jones had some nice opportunities today, too. Scored a beauty on Ben Maxwell in the third scrimmage.

Zach Cohen had a bit of a jump in his step today. Had a nice 2-on-1 chance with Greg Mauldin and then scored on a nice penalty shot attempt in the second.

Matt Duchene scored a pretty goal on Trevor Cann in the first. Milan Hejduk set him up.

Julian Talbot scored a goal in the first also.

David Koci threw his weight around today. Leveled Jonas Holos in the second.

T.J. Galiardi had a nice day. At one point he stole the puck from Hejduk(?) and broke in with Stewart. Left a nice drop pass that led to a Colby Cohen goal later on.

As I mentioned above, Winnik got into a scrap with Quincey in the second. I'd give the edge to Winnik, even though there wasn't much going on. Also had a really nice opportunity in the second.

Wacey Hamilton continues to plug away. I'm really hoping the Avs (or at least the Monsters) give him a contract. He's won me over.
