Pro Sports Hockey Detroit Red Wings Datsyuk wins the Selke while Howard gets snubbed

In the hot desert of Las Vegas, ice could be found in Sin City in the form of the 2010 NHL Awards Show held tonight.  With what is usually an eye-rolling production, I actually found tonight's show pretty entertaining, mostly because Ron MacLean wasn't hosting.  Snoop was great and the Getzlaf/Ryan Ducks segment was great and well done.

As for the awards, Pasha went 1 for 2 tonight, winning the Selke but losing the Lady Byng to Martin St. Louis.  I actually don't mind this that much since the Lady Byng might as well be named the Pavel Datsyuk Honorary Trophy anyway.  Dats has won 4 of the last 5 and while no one can resist that Russian charm, St. Louis is one of my favorite non-Wings so I'm more than happy to see him win.

The only real beef I have is with Jimmy Howard and the Calder Trophy.  You want to know why he didn't win?  1) Because he's 26 years old and 2) because he's a Red Wing.

First, he's still a rookie, regardless of how old he is.  It should not be held against him because the Wings management is competent and don't bring up prospects before they are ready.  Second, who cares whether he was on the good team or a poor one?  The Wings don't make the playoffs without Jimmy Howard, period, not even close.  Could Colorado and Buffalo make the playoffs without Dushene and Myers?  Maybe, maybe not, but you can't say that any rookie this year was more valuable to their team that Howard was for the Franchise.

As for the winner, Myers, congrats are in order.  He's a great player and has a bright future in the league.  But it should be pointed out that Buffalo won their division this year so maybe he shouldn't have won either since his team was pretty good.

Oh, and I hope Duncan Keith gets a nice bonus for winning the Norris that goes against the Hawks' cap.

Howard shouldn't even have been considered, IMHO, after playing significantly more time as a pro than Duchene and Myers.
