So would you touch it? (The Cup, you sicko)
So there is a nasty rumor going around that the Wings didn't win the Cup this year. I've already contacted the FBI and the Canadien authorities and we're working to resolve the issue. In the mean time, everyone in Chicago thinks the Blackhawks' won (again, we're looking into this) and today, the Stanley Cup was on display at Daley Plaza for all to see, admire . . . and touch?
Call me a traditionalist but I was taught that you don't touch it unless you win it. Period. It goes for players and fans, alike. You didn't win it so don't touch it. In fact, its bad luck to touch it if you haven't won it. I know players' wives and kids have handled it after their team wins but thats about it. So I was a bit astonished when I saw fans grabbing it, hugging it, kissing it, groping it, etc. Like I said, maybe I'm a traditionalist and a Cup-prude but there is a certain mystique that comes with the Stanley Cup and it deserves respect and honor. Its the reason why the Stanley Cup is infinitely better than the Lombardi Trophy or the NBA Championship Trophy (does it have an actual name, I don't even know.) Its why the Cup has a bodyguard and travels better than most of us that aren't Presidents and Prime Ministers do.
So what do you think? Is it ok for a fan to touch it or should fans refrain just like players on the other 29 teams do?
As a note - I don't want to turn this into a Wings/Hawks fight. The fans at Daley Plaza were great today, from what I saw, and I'm sure they all respect and honor the Cup. Just wondering about the tradition of not touching it.
